Why I make videos and write crazy things!
There is no so much information emerging each day about the microbiome, (the gut biome).
So here it is as I understand it, after a great deal of research and investigation
There is a symbiotic relationship between the organisms that live in your gut and your body, and the scope and magnitude is misunderstood and underestimated. Good organisms do good things, and bad ones do bad things. Bad ones can make you crave bad foods, and good ones can make you crave good ones.
We are unraveling the human genome; however we are now learning how our genes interact with the genetic material in the organisms in our guts. There is more foreign DNA in your body than native DNA, and it is residing in the gut biome. These interactions are far reaching, affecting conditions such as Parkinson’s, Depression, and other disorders such as autism.
We now know that interactions with the biome, such as taking an antibiotic can cause a change in the gut biome, and it can cause measurable changes in many unforeseen areas. Read this authors account of what happened when his autistic son was given antibiotics:
So right there we see that gut organisms can influence our behaviors and cravings, but they can also affect neurological function such as Autism spectrum disorders and imbalances in the gut have far reaching effects.
The gut can even be involved in psychological states like PTSD. The exact mechanisms are unknown but we are shaped by our environment, the foods we eat, and thoughts we think.
I have long surmised that the gut and brain and intimately related, I have gone so far as to say depression is made in the kitchen, and ADHD and IBS are the same condition and many people who have ADHD also have IBS.
The gut has a brain of its own called the enteric nervous system and it communicates with the brain through nerves directly and also through neurotransmitters. Neurotransmitters are the floating messenger system in the body. The two systems mirror each other, and the gut biome has a good amount of input here. did you know that 90 % of the serotonin (happy neurotransmitter) is made in the GI tract from the amino acid tryptophan? At night serotonin is converted to melatonin?
In the chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia population there seems to be a deficit in this neurotransmitter which interrupts sleep cycles, and simply giving medications to elevate serotonin does not work because they are deficient in the neurotransmitter due to one of several issues related to the gut, as well as mineral deficiencies that catalyze serotonin conversion.
I coined the term “Sick Belly Sydrome” to categorize the problems I was seeing over and over again in my work with Fibro/ CFS/ ME patients. Sick Belly begins in the stomach with conditions such as heartburn or indigestion (made worse by drugs and food sensitivities) and then works its way into the gut causing dysbiosis, candida overgrowth, SIBO, leaky gut, IBS. After a while with these issues some develop nutritional deficiencies such as low B12, Iron/ Ferritin, Magnesium, and other trace minerals and even low neurotransmitter levels that can lead to depression.
There is a revolution arising from a bunch of people, myself included, who are looking at what is going on and saying. There has to be a better way.
People I counsel are taking 6-10 prescription drugs and a pile of supplements and they are no better, in fact most become worse insidiously from a few drugs that are presumed innocent but are terrible disruptors to fundamental functions.
We have to do better, 1:48 boys are now in the autism spectrum, all autoimmune diseases are up, diabetes is way up, and national healthcare will not help, in fact, if you rely on the government to help you are in danger of becoming a statistic.
The interesting thing about statistics is they are impotent until you are one of them, it’s the same as problems, and it’s ok for there to be problems until they are yours, proximity is directly proportional to severity. A statistic is a human being with the tears wiped off.
If you want to tune in and tune up I’m into it in every way, ask questions, challenge me, argue, and create discussion! I have been creating health related videos for a while.
People close to me have asked me why I make these videos, some people laugh at me, and I’m ok with that.
I don't do them because I like how I look on camera (quite the opposite), or I like listening to myself talk, or because I want to get famous. My answer is pretty simple, I do them because I have too, and my mission is greater than the discomfort I feel in doing the videos.
I feel as though I am responsible for the health of my family, my friends and my community. What good is knowledge I have if no one sees it or benefits from it.
If one person benefits it’s a win. You don’t hide your light under a rock, so it is better to light a single candle than to curse the darkness.
As for me, I have been a lighthouse my entire life, people come into the light for various things, early on it was weight training and exercise, and now its health, its my vocation and my avocation for almost 25 years.
I am not shy about it because this is my truth, and what I am here for and at the risk of people thinking I’m crazy, which I may be, I know in my heart and soul there are better ways of doing things and I am working hard on creating a community of people who will benefit from what I have to share.
I am pretty organized in a mad scientist sort of way. I have been thinking of making a group just for these videos and various health ramblings, but for now I have a few places where you can find things.
