Herniated Discs

An intervertebral disk acts as shock absorber and a spacer between each of the vertebrae in the spinal column by keeping the vertebrae separated when there is impact from activity. They also serve to protect the nerves that run down the middle of the spine and out to the body.

There are a total of 24 discs in the human spine. Each disc is a hydrodynamic structure, meaning it has a high percentage of water that makes it resist compression. The water in the disc is enormously important because water is not compressible.

The disks are made of tough fibrocartilaginous material. The outside of the disk is made of a strong material called the annulus fibrosus. Inside this protective covering is a jelly-like substance known as mucoprotein gel known as the nucleus pulposus. As the spine receives pressure, the gel moves inside the annulus fibrosus and redistributes itself to absorb the impact of the pressure. 

The annulus fibrosus of the intervertebral disc can degenerate and then an begin to rip, and this causes chronic back pain for some people.

The first reason this happens is due to improper mechanics. This can starts with poor posture or some type of mechanical injury. Proper spinal motion is necessary to push fluid and nourishment in and out of the disc. Abnormal alignment and poor motion causes the exchange of nutrients and fluids to slow down or even stop. Without adequate nutrition and fluids the disc dessicates, or drys up, the disc strength is greatly reduced and more susceptible to injury.

The second factor that causes disc degeneration and herniated is dehyrdration, and smoking. Both smoking and dehydration dry the disc out thereby accelerating the wear and tear on the disc.

The last factor is poor nutrition. The body requires many vitamins, minerals and macronutrients to function optimally. A good well rounded anti inflammatory diet is insurance against disc herniation and degeneration.

Once a disc has degenerated or herniated the treatment is focused on removing pressure from the nerves that the discs are pressing on and then working to stabilize the spine and minimize pressure on the discs with spinal decompression. This allows the healing process to begin.

Over time a most discs can heal, and you can once again have a pain free life.
